Virginia Tech recruiting 2013: Hokies putting together another solid class

VT has a commitment from the top JUCO prospect in the country.

Jeremy Brevard-USA TODAY Sports

Virginia Tech has gotten off to a 6-2 start in 2013, despite struggling on the field at times. On the recruiting trail, the Hokies are having some success, already receiving verbal pledges from 22 prospects.

Tech has picked up two commitments in the month of October. Three-star defensive tackle Ricky Walker committed on Oct. 6, and three-star wide receiver Kendrick Holland made his commitment on Oct. 21. The Hokies’ class is currently ranked 20th in the nation and fifth in the ACC.

The top prospects in the class are the teammates from Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy. Safety Holland Fisher, who is the top JUCO player in the class, stands 6’1 and weighs in at 200 pounds. He’s a four-star prospect, according to the 247Sports composite rankings. Running back D.J. Reid is another four-star player, checking in at 6’1 and 195 pounds. He’s the fourth-best JUCO prospect overall, and he’s the top JUCO running back.

Four-star Javon Harrison, out of Lakeland (Fla.) Kathleen High, is a 6’1, 187-pound athlete. He ranks 195th in the country, 13th at his position and 26th in his home state.

Another running back in the class, Marshawn Williams, is rated as a three-star by the 247 composite. He’s 5’11, 215 pounds, and currently plays for Hampton (Va.) Phoebus High. Williams is ranked No. 434 overall, No. 30 at running back and No. 16 among players from Virginia.

Stars on target

With Miami’s improving recruiting, Virginia Tech will also need to step up its game to remain a major contender in the Coastal Division.

The Hokies have two four-stars on the top of the board.

The first is Derrick Nnadi, a four-star defensive tackle from Virginia Beach’s Ocean Lakes High School. Nnadi is considered a very strong lean to the Hokies.

The second is Shai McKenzie, a four-star running back from Washington (Pa.) High School. who is also considering Pitt and Virginia Tech. McKenzie is a bruising back in the mold of a Lee Suggs type player.
