Vanderbilt football recruiting 2013: Commodores’ class filling out

QB K.J. Carta-Samuels, a commit since the summer of 2012, is close to signing and leading this talented class.

The good news for Vanderbilt: thus far, Vandy’s 2014 recruiting class is ranked No. 26 in the nation. Borderline Top 25 is good! Bad news: that’s still 10th best in the SEC. Maybe it’s time to move Vanderbilt to the Big Ten; it would improve the average level of recruiting quality in both conferences.

Vanderbilt’s recruiting class continues to fill out with commits from CB Amani Oruwariye out of Gaither High in Tampa (FL) and WR Kameron Uter of Pace Academy in Atlanta. Both players joined the fold on Oct. 20, the day after Vandy knocked off Georgia and gave James Franklin one of the biggest wins of his career. With those two commits, Vanderbilt’s up to 20 on the year.

The Commodores’ crown jewel of the 2014 class is quarterback K.J. Carta-Samuels, who will instantly have the best name among all SEC QBs the moment he sets foot on campus. Carta-Samuels is a consensus 4-star pro-style QB from Bellarmine Prep in San Jose, CA, and an Elite 11 finalist. Vandy got in on Carta-Samuels early, as he committed in July of 2012; he’ll finally be allowed to put pen to paper and get his SEC career started in February.

The SEC is a team speed conference, and that goes for linemen as well as skill positions. To that end, keep an eye on DE Lloyd Tubman, a commit who’s a 3-star on 247Composite. Tubman is a beast in the making at 6’5 and 235 pounds, and although his listed 40 time of 4.54 is preposterous, he’s legitimately fast enough to be a capital-p Problem for opposing linemen. Tubman is a product of Seneca Academy in Louisville, KY, and as such he’s gotten offers from local schools like Indiana, Louisville and Kentucky, but he’s a firm Vandy commit.

Safety Kyle Gibson looks to be the latest in a long line of D-I products from powerhouse Armwood High in Seffner, FL; Gibson is a 3-star who boasted offers from FSU, Miami, Notre Dame, Louisville and many more before settling on Vanderbilt. Gibson is the 21st-ranked safety prospect in the class according to the 247Composite.

RB Mikale Wilbon of the De La Salle Institute in Chicago (IL) is also on board with the Commodores; Wilbon is 5’9 and 195 pounds, and his offer sheet was Big Ten-heavy with a few lower-level SEC offers. He’s a legit top-20 RB prospect nationally, with speed and toughness in spades,
