Arizona State football recruiting 2014: Sun Devils building strong class

Arizona State is having some success in the recruiting game.

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

Arizona State isn’t always a recruiting powerhouse, but the Sun Devils building a nice class for the 2014 cycle. They have 18 commitments so far, and five of those are from four-star prospects, according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

ASU has picked up three commitments in the last month, two coming from four-star players. Outside linebacker Derik Calhoun pledged on Oct. 27, and wide receiver Jalen Harvey gave his commitment on Oct. 21. Three-star offensive tackle Sam Jones committed on Oct. 22. As it stands, the Sun Devils’ class ranks 24th nationally and third in the Pac-12, trailing rival Arizona and Stanford.

Four-star wide receiver Tyler Whiley is the top prospect in the class. Out of Scottsdale (Ariz.) Chaparral High, Whiley stands 6’1 and weighs in at 190 pounds. He’s rated as the No. 156 player in the nation, per 247 composite, the 24th-best wide receiver and the sixth-best player from his home state.

Calhoun, 6’, 215 pounds, plays his high school ball at El Cerrito (Calif.) High. He’s No. 163 in the nation, No. 13 at outside linebacker and No. 18 in the state of California. Calhoun’s teammate at El Cerrito, Harvey stands 6’1 and weighs in at 175 pounds. He ranks 294 in the country, and he’s the No. 42 wide receiver and No. 32 player from California.

Dual-threat quarterback Manny Wilkins is another four-star prospect, ranked No. 292 overall. From Novata (Calif.) San Marin High, Wilkins checks in at 6’2, 180 pounds, and he’s the sixth-best player at his position and 30th-best player from California.

Top target

Tashon Smallwood, a defensive tackle out of Fresno (Calif.) Central East, is a quality player carrying a four-star rating. Arizona State seems to be trending over Oklahoma for him. And Arizona State will definitely need strong defensive line play being in the same division as USC and UCLA.
