Washington recruiting 2013: Two wide receivers anchor a still growing class

The Huskies are in good shape, despite having only eight recruits so far.

Kevin Casey

Although the Huskies boast one of the finest recruiters in the land in Tosh Lupoi, he and the rest of the Washington coaching staff still have some work to do. The 2014 class currently ranks 59th in the country and eighth in the Pac-12, according to the 247sports composite. Much of that ranking has to do with the size of the class thus far -- with only eight commitments, Washington has the second smallest class in the Pac-12.

In fact, the quality of players Washington has recruited so far have rated quite favorably. With an average score of 87.64 on the 247sports composite, Washington’s recruits grade higher than almost every other team in the Pac-12, trailing only Oregon’s 88.16 and USC’s 89.23.

Washington is off to a 4-0 start and is holding steady in the polls, but that has yet to pay off in recruiting, as the Huskies have not added any new recruits since late July. Their last addition was 6’5, 275 pound offensive tackle Matt James from Coeur D’Alene, Idaho. James is a three-star recruit on the 247sports composite and ranked in the top 80 at his position. He will come to Seattle with high school teammate and three-star athlete Chase Blakley, who committed in May.

The Huskies have several candidates to replace quarterback Keith Price after he gradutes this year, but whoever takes over will have some new targets. The top recruit for Washington so far is Fontana (Calif.) Summit wide receiver Erik Brown, who is rated in the top 25 at his position, according to the 247sports composite. Brown is one of two receivers who Washington has brought in so far -- the other is Long Beach (Calif.) Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo's Rahshead Johnson, who rates just slightly behind Brown as the 28th-ranked wide receiver this year.

There’s also some incoming talent on the other side of the ball as well. Washington’s best recruit on defense so far is cornerback Jonathan Lockett, who hails from Southern California football power Mater Dei. Lockett is a four-star recruit on the 247sports composite, and a top 25 corner this year.

On target

Washington is in a good position to land a few more four-stars. Offensive tackle Andrew Mike, of Tuscon (Ariz.) Sabino High School, would be a nice get. Mike is also considering Arizona. Strong-side defensive end Kaleb Mcgary, of Tacoma (Wa.) Fife High School, is a strong Washington lean. And Claudeson Pelon, of Mesa (Ariz.) Community College, is also likely to head to Washington.
