Florida football recruiting 2013: Despite a slide, still looking strong

A drop in the rankings doesn’t look like it’s anything to panic about just yet.

Andy Lyons

When we last checked in with the Gators, Will Muschamp was building himself a very nice top-10 recruiting class. They’ve slipped a bit since then, but there is still much to like about what is happening in Gainesville -- Florida has slid just four spots since September and is now 12th in the country, rather than eighth.

Potentially worrisome is where they stand in relation to their SEC competition -- the Gators’ recruiting class is now sixth in the conference, according to the 247sports composite, trailing Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU and Texas A&M. LSU and Texas A&M passed Florida in the last month, with Ole Miss still just a hair behind.

Still, it would be premature to declare this 2014 class in trouble. With an average recruit score of 90.99, Florida is fourth in the conference in this statistic, meaning that it is still very competitive relative to the other SEC schools, and it does have commitments from three five-star recruits, the kind that are supposed to be program changers. The rest of the conference has four in total.

Perhaps the best explanation for its drop is the easiest one: simple inactivity.

While other teams have added recruits in the last month, Florida has not and remains at a 14-man class. Indeed, its last new commitments came from five-star wide receiver Ermon Lane, four-star cornerback Chris Lammons and four-star safety Quincy Wilson, all of whom pledged to be Gators back in mid-August. Each of them ranks in the top 20 at their positions on the 247sports composite.
