Maryland recruiting 2014: Terps have small, front-loaded class

The Terrapins have a few stars on top in their 2014 class, but are hoping to add two five-stars.

Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

That Maryland has struggled on the field under Randy Edsall has been no secret. In games after Oct. 13 (also known as the second half of the season), the Terps boast a 0-16 record under their coach, and are coming off a hideous home loss to Syracuse.

Maryland’s class is ranked 47th in the nation, according to the 247Sports composite rankings, with 12 commitments and three four-star recruits. That’s good for 11th in the ACC, in front of just Duke, Syracuse and Wake Forest.

That’s not to say there isn’t talent in the Terps’ class, led by Jesse Aniebonam. The defensive end from Good Counsel (Md.) High School is considered a four-star by the 247Sports composite. He is rated as the seventh-best strong-side defensive end in the country and the second-best player in the state.

Derwin Gray is another top talent for Maryland. Signed as a part of last year’s class, the offensive tackle is at Fork Union (Va.) Military Academy this year and is rated as a four-star. He is considered the second-best prep player in the nation, the best offensive tackle in the prep class and the second-best prep player in the state.

Juwann Winfree is another big get for the Terrapins. The wide receiver from Dwight Morrow (N.J.) High School is considered a four-star by the 247Sports composite. He is rated as the 20th-best athlete in the country and the eighth-best player in the state.

Still to come -- Bud Elliott, National Recruiting Analyst

Maryland still has two huge local targets on its board in five-star offensive tackle Damian Prince, and five-star corner Jalen Tabor. Ohio State is probably the biggest competition for Prince, while Florida is the biggest competitor for Tabor.

Offensive coordinator Mike Locksley is the main read the pair is considering the Terrapins, as he is a tremendous recruiter in the D.C. area. Can Maryland finish on the trail and land both players like it did with Stefon Diggs?
