Rutgers football has lost 3 of its top recruits so far this week

Rutgers’ skill positions take several hits in a short time span.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood has some opinions on committed recruits taking more official visits. And that opinion means he has fewer top-level commitments today than he did a week ago.

Four-star safety Kiy Hester just decommitted from the program after being in the fold since June, and per 247Sports.com, he’s now looking at Arkansas, Michigan State and Vanderbilt. So what changed? Per NJ.com, Hester ran afoul of Flood by wanting to take more visits, that’s what:

When Hester contacted Rutgers head coach Kyle Flood to reveal his intentions, things did not go as planned. Hester says it was made clear to him that committed players taking official visits elsewhere is frowned upon and would result in him having his scholarship rescinded.

“I called coach Flood, and the way the conversation went, they basically closed the door,” said Hester. “That’s the way it sounded to me. That’s how the conversation basically ended. He was just like, ‘There is nothing left to say.’ And that was the end of the conversation.”

One departing commit, fans can look past without hesitation. Multiple in a short time, though, and you might have to wonder. As On The Banks notes, Adonis Jennings (a 4-star WR) just decommitted as well. He recently visited Iowa and has Pitt high on his list as well.

Oh, and Lamont Simmons, a 3-star cornerback who had been committed for over a month? Gone from the class as of Monday as soon as USC offered. We can’t blame him, because USC is beautiful and Rutgers is in a state that snows. It’s really no contest.

This is becoming a pattern with Rutgers, who watched CB Deion Hallmon’s commitment evaporate in September (he’s now a heavy Wisconsin lean) and bid adieu to WR commit David Njoku in October. Not good days in New Brunswick. Not good.
