Arizona football recruiting 2014: Wildcats sitting pretty

The Wildcats may not finish the season atop the Pac-12 recruiting rankings, but there’s plenty to work with here.

Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

With an astonishing 27 commitments already secured, the 247Sports composite rankings currently rates Arizona’s 2014 class as the best of the Pac-12. Stanford, Oregon and UCLA all offer legitimate challenges, though, so the Wildcats may not necessarily stay there -- and with such a huge class already, there is not much further to go unless they see some decommitments. On a per-play basis, the class is decidedly middle of the pack.

In the last month, Peoria (Ariz.) Centennial tackle Layth Friekh, Tucson (Ariz.) Salpointe Catholic wide receiver Kaelin Deboskie and Cape Coral (Fla.) Ida S. Baker tackle Levi Walton became the three latest Wildcats for Rich Rodriguez. All are three-star recruits on the 247Sports composite and rank among the top 100 players at their position this season, with Friekh leading the trio as the 48th-ranked tackle.

As promising as Friekh, Deboskie and Walton might be, you could argue that the core of Arizona’s class sits elsewhere. Take outside linebackers Marquis Ware and Jamardre Cobb, for example. Teammates out of Los Angeles (Calif.) Bishop Mora Salesian, both are four-stars on the 247Sports composite, and are the 15th and 16th-ranked OLBs, respectively, for this class.

Teammates are actually a trend this year for the Wildcats, as another one of their higher-rated recruits -- four-star cornerback Cameron Denson -- also hails from Salpointe Catholic, and another three players -- four-star running back Nick Wilson, three-star cornerback Devon Brewer and three-star defensive tackle Sharif Williams -- all come from Fresno Central East in California.
