Utah football recruiting 2014: Utes working with small class

Utah still has room for talent in this recruiting cycle.

Casey Sapio-USA TODAY Sports

Utah has struggled a bit since joining the Pac-12 before the 2011 season, and right now, the Utes’ 2014 recruiting class is lacking in numbers. They currently have just 13 commitments and are ranked 52nd nationally and sixth among Pac-12 teams, according to 247Sports’ composite ratings.

Utah added two recent commitments. Strongside defensive end Pasoni Tasini and safety Monte Seabrook pledged on Nov. 5.

Offensive tackle Jackson Barton, out of Salt Lake City’s Brighton High, is the top player in the class. A four-star prospect, he’s ranked 241st nationally, per the 247 composite, and he’s listed at No. 18 at his position and No. 3 in his home state. The Utes also have a commitment from offensive tackle Kenyon Frison from Salt Lake City’s Granger High. Frison stands 6’5 and weighs in at 290 pounds, and he’s ranked No. 396 in the nation, No. 33 at his position and No. 4 in the state of Utah.

On the defensive side of the ball, the Utes have another Salt Lake City commitment in Highland’s Pita Tonga. He ranks 470th in the country, and he’s the No. 38 DT and No. 5 player from his home state.

Still to come -- Bud Elliott, National Recruiting Analyst

Kweishi Brown, a three-star cornerback from Grossmot (Calif.) College, is a top target for the Utes. Utah’s pass defense isn’t what its run defense is, and adding a junior college cornerback could potentially help that unit right away.
