Johnnie Dixon commits to Ohio State: Buckeyes land elite receiver recruit

Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes landed another top prospect on Tuesday.

Bud Elliott

Consensus four-star wide receiver Johnnie Dixon committed to Ohio State on Tuesday, choosing the Buckeyes over Alabama and Miami. He has known his choice for some time now, and recently had an in-home visit with Urban Meyer.

Dixon is from Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) Dwyer High School holds offers from Florida and Florida State in addition to Miami. He stands 5’10, weighs 187 pounds and has been clocked running a 4.53 40-yard dash. According to the 247Sports composite, he is the 16th-best receiver in the 2014 class and the No. 106 overall prospect.

Rivals rates him similarly -- 17th at his position, 109th overall. Like the other two services, Scout considers him a four-star player, but ranks him 39th among wide receivers.

Dixon is another major addition to OSU’s class, and his verbal comes just a day after five-star linebacker Raekwon McMillan committed to the Buckeyes. Ohio State has 19 commitments secured for 2014.

Bud Elliott, SB Nation National Recruiting Analyst: Dixon is a very good player. He appears to be bigger than his listed 5’10 and 187 pounds, and is well build and strong. Dixon’s best attribute is his deep game, with the ability to quickly climb and get deep, and to go up and get the football better than a smaller receiver might. Having watched Dixon for two years, however, and in the recent Florida State High School finals, I am not overwhelmed by Dixon’s ability to get open underneath and pick up first downs. That can be improved in time if Dixon works on his route running.

I do think Dixon could be used on runs, and would definitely fake the ball to him off jet or orbit motion as well, given his speed and strength combination. Additionally, Dixon seems like a bright kid who could pick up an offense fairly early. And he is a competitor who plays through the whistle, and who also plays both ways, at corner, in big games.
