Virginia Tech recruiting 2013: Short on stars

A strong group of freshmen are coming to Blacksburg, but the real question is if they compare to those elsewhere in conference.

February is still a long way off, but it looks like it will be another top 25 class for Frank Beamer and the Hokies, which would give them little to complain about. A look at the 247sports composite reveals a bit more about this group, which trails those being assembled at North Carolina, Clemson, Florida State and Miami. This is mostly due to a gap in star power -- VaTech has only three 4-star players committed, compared to FSU, UM and Clemson, who each have upward of nine. With 25 players already pledged, though, it doesn’t look like they’ll have much room to add any more.

The Hokies added two new commitments in December from 3-star athlete Tabyus Taylor and 3-star quarterback Chris Durkin, both of whom are in the top 100 at their respective positions. They are part of 20 other 3-star commitments that Beamer and company have secured, indicating a class heavy on solid contributors, if nothing else.

Virginia Tech also continues to keep a handle on most in-state talent, as well, having secured a commitment from several top players there, including 4-star safety Holland Fisher and 3-star running back D.J. Reid. Fisher is Reid’s teammate at Fork Union Military Academy, but that’s not the only reason to know his name. Fisher, 4-star athlete Javon Harrison and dual-threat quarterback Travon McMillian make up the top recruits in the class.
