Shaq Davidson recruit scouting report: He gets open

Shaq Davidson has emerged as an elite talent in South Carolina, which has made him a coveted player in the Southeast. The consensus four-star wide receiver from Gaffney High School has scholarship offers from South Carolina, Florida State, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Notre Dame and Tennessee, among others.

Davidson is the No. 90 overall prospect in the 2014 class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings, and the No. 13 player at his position. Scout ranks him just 22nd among wide receivers and has him at No. 115 overall. Rivals’ evaluation is closer to the consensus, placing him 12th at receiver and 85th nationally. ESPN, on the other hand, ranks Davidson 146th overall and 19th at receiver.

The 6’0, 170-pounder earned an invite to the 2014 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in October. He spent a significant portion of his last two high school seasons playing quarterback, though he does have experience as a wide receiver as well.

You can follow Davidson on Twitter here.

Bud Elliott, National Recruiting Analyst: There is a lot to like about Davidson, a player I consider among the best 15 or so receiver recruits in the country.

Davidson has good but not great size. And with that he pairs a few excellent attributes. The first is his acceleration. Davidson might not be the fastest receiver in the country, but he reaches top speed quite quickly. Quite simply, he is able to change directions and will be able to get open and away from defenders solely with his quickness and agility. His quickness will also help him to beat press coverage.

Davidson can play the slot or an outside position, provided he bulks up a bit. I like this player quite a bit. He plays tough and even played quarterback some for his high school in 2013. Davidson’s ability to get open will help him earn early playing time while the rest of his game develops.
