Marlon Humphrey, 2014 cornerback recruit scouting report: son of Bama great

Marlon Humphrey, son of Alabama All-American Bobby Humphrey, is widely considered the best cornerback in the class of 2014 -- will he join the Crimson Tide like his father?

Marlon Humphrey has the Alabama Crimson Tide in his blood, but that doesn't mean the player considered by some to be the top cornerback in the Class of 2014 will definitely be headed to Tuscaloosa. And it certainly hasn't stopped other schools from recruiting him.

Humphrey, a 6'0, 178-pound high school junior who plays for Hoover (Al.) is the son of Bobby Humphrey, a two-time All-American running back for the Crimson Tide. The elder Humphrey ran for 1,471 yards as a sophomore, then a school record, before being selected in the first round of the 1989 Supplemental Draft by the Denver Broncos. His pro career was somewhat of a washout after a strong rookie year -- as ESPN's Alex Scarbrough detailed in an article about the relationship between the father and son -- so Humphrey returned to Alabama. One of his other sons, Maudrecus Humphrey, had been a wide receiver for Arkansas, but is no longer with the team after a connection with dorm burglaries.

All that leaves some big shoes for Marlon Humphrey to fill. He’s easily a top cornerback recruit -- he’s a consensus five-star 247 has him as the No. 1 prospect at the position in the nation, Scout has him No. 2, and although Rivals does not yet have positional rankings, they have Humphrey as the No. 10 player in the nation -- and he has a dozen offers, per 247. Alabama is obviously one, but he’s also highly considering Florida, Mississippi State, and South Carolina.

Bud Elliott -- SB Nation National Recruiting Analyst: Humphrey is one of the best cornerback recruits in the class of 2014. He has excellent size and good length, which is strongly desired in the SEC as defenses like to play a lot of press man-to-man coverage. Humphrey is also very athletic. When watching film, it’s easy to see which recruits get by on natural ability and which actually work at their craft. Humphrey is clearly in the latter category. He’s received good coaching and it shows up in his positioning and discipline. He is also an active run defender, delivering big hits, but also wrapping up when he tackles. Humphrey should be able avoid a redshirt and see immediate playing time at most any school he chooses.
