Kain Daub, elite 2014 linebacker recruit scouting report: size, length and speed

Daub was once committed to LSU, but now he’s exploring his options.

Kain Daub, a linebacker prospect from Sandalwood High School in Jacksonville (Fla.), is one of the top players at his position in the class of 2014, which has led to plenty of attention from the nation’s top programs. He committed to LSU last summer, but re-opened his recruitment in November. Now he’s looking at Alabama, North Carolina, Florida State, Miami and Auburn, among others. He also has offers from the likes of Oregon, Ohio State, Florida, Southern Cal and South Carolina.

Visit SB Nation's college football recruiting hub for more coverage.

Daub, who is listed at 6’3 and 227 pounds, is considered a four-star prospect by Scout and Rivals. He is rated a five-star prospect and the No. 12 overall player in his class by 247Sports, which is significantly higher than the No. 60 overall ranking granted by Rivals. Scout lists aggressiveness, instincts and tackling technique among his strengths.

You can find Daub on Twitter right here.

Bud Elliott -- SB Nation National Recruiting Analyst: The first thing that jumps out about Daub is his size. He’s very large for a high school linebacker, and is quite long. Plus, his frame is not maxed out. Daub can add at least another 15 pounds of muscle.

Daub’s highlight consists mostly of attacking gaps. He’s quite adept at doing so, recording multiple tackles for loss and big hits. In many of the clips, he times the snap and comes through untouched. While quite effective, Daub won’t be able to do that quite so often in college. Still, he shows good athleticism and burst in those clips.

He also does a nice job of taking on and shedding blockers and picking through traffic to reach and stop the ball carrier. Daub does a good job of diagnosing plays and not overpursuing, which shows good discipline. And when he gets there, Daub seems to wrap up consistently.

There are not enough clips of Daub in coverage to evaluate his talents in that area. However, I did speak with Chad Simmons of the Scout network recently, and he relayed that he saw Daub play cornerback at a 7-on-7 event and was impressed with his coverage skills.
