One recruit to watch in the state of Florida is defensive back Quincy Wilson, who is already receiving a lot of attention from many of the major schools.

Wilson currently stands at 6’2 and weighs in at 195 pounds. He hails from Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) University School. Wilson projects as either a cornerback or a safety in college. Wilson is a consensus four-star recruit, and he is ranked 165th nationally in the 2014 recruiting class by Rivals. Wilson is considered a top-50 safety in this class according to 247 Sports; that ranking leaps up to top ten safety status with Scout. As of February, Wilson holds offers from SEC schools like Auburn, Florida, LSU, South Carolina and Texas A&M, with other schools like Clemson, Notre Dame, Ohio State and Stanford getting into the mix.

Bud Elliott, National Recruiting Analyst: Wilson is a tricky evaluation because I don’t know what position he will play in college. He is the son of former Miami Hurricane cornerback Chad Wilson, and plays cornerback in high school. But here is where it gets tricky: Wilson is 6’2 and looks to be at least 200 pounds. And he is probably not done growing. He excels at press coverage and really bullies receiver at the line of scrimmage, sometimes even driving them back behind the line. But Wilson does not have the same speed or lateral agility as other elite cornerback recruits. And he doesn’t look all that natural at cornerback.

Can Wilson stay at cornerback in college? It’s possible, and will depend on the style of defense played by the school to which he commits. If he finds a system that can take advantage of his length and power, and minimize how often he is asked to cover downfield, it could work.

It could also be that Wilson continues to grow and add muscle, and that he moves to safety. If that is the case, he profiles as a big safety, but with plus range for his size.

As long as Wilson finds a system that fits his skills, he should turn into a good player and a multi-year strarter at the college level.
