A tall, talented wide receiver is a big get for any program, so it’s no surprise some of college football’s best teams were fighting for the services of four-star wideout Derrick Griffin. The 6’7 receiver from Rosenberg, Texas committed to Texas A&M in January of 2012, but Signing Day came and went without Griffin faxing in his letter of intent to head coach Kevin Sumlin and the Aggies after A&M declined to give him one to sign.

Instead, Griffin signed and sent in his LOI to Al Golden and the Hurricanes on Tuesday in an upset decision that was rather unexpected. Add that to the surprise post-NSD commitment of four-star athlete Corn Elder, and voila:

Texas A&M became a long shot for Griffin when he ran into issues with his grades, with Blinn College rumors returning. Griffin has not yet signed with a junior college, but the expectation remains that he will not be eligible to enroll at Miami this summer and will have his arrival there delayed by a year or more.

Griffin is a tremendous pickup for the ‘Canes with great abilities as a receiver. He’s ranked in the top 10 for all wide receivers by Rivals in the 2013 class.

Ratings: Four stars from Rivals

Vitals: 6’7, 210 lbs.

Other offers: Texas A&M, Auburn, Baylor, Notre Dame, Oklahoma

Recruitment timeline: Griffin committed to Texas A&M in early January of 2012 and took a recent official visit to Auburn. He has not visited Miami.
