Ronald Monroe is a speedster from Sugar Land, Texas, with the physical skills to play other positions but passing ability that makes him a likely dual-threat quarterback in college.
Monroe’s height apparently fluctuates depending on what sport he’s playing -- he’s listed as 6’2 by most football services, but a profile for his basketball recruiting lists him at 6’4 -- but what’s known is that he’s an effective, fast quarterback.
He weighs in at 180 pounds, and is listed as running a 4.5 40 by Rivals. Despite his speed and size, the prospect from George Bush High School (Texas) in Sugar Land likely won’t be considered a wide receiver, thanks to his arm and passing instincts.
The two-sport athlete didn’t run the ball much as expected for a quarterback of his athletic ability -- he gained only 185 yards on over 100 attempts. However, as a junior Monroe improved, taking roughly half as many carries for nearly 60 more yards, finishing with 243 yards and six touchdowns on the ground.
Monroe also improved his passing efficiency, throwing fewer interceptions on more attempts. During his sophomore season, the Houston-area product was highly successful going vertical on deep passes either from the pocket or on the run, while showing the ability to consistently hit receivers dead in stride on those attempts.
Overall, Monroe has a level of refinement as a passer that is not entirely common for dual-threat quarterbacks at the high school level, meaning that he will enter a college program more advanced than many athletic passers.
A prospect who may have to wait until his senior season to see his stock take off, if Monroe can continue to improve in the running game, his ceiling as a prospect increases substantially.
Scout lists the consensus three-star as the No. 20 dual-threat quarterback in the country, while Rivals considers him the No. 32 player at any position in Texas. 247 considers him an athlete, No. 42 in the country on that list.
As of February 2013, Monroe’s only offer was from Houston, basically a hometown school for the Sugar Land native.
