Arrion Springs, a cornerback from Roosevelt High School (TX), is one of the top prospects at his position in the class of 2014. Springs has scholarship offers from Baylor, Oklahoma, Texas Tech, and Vanderbilt. He is also receiving interest from Florida, Southern Cal, Oregon and Florida State, among others, and told SB Nation Recruiting during the summer of 2012 that he wanted to go out of state for college.

Springs is 5’11 and weighs 187 pounds, runs a 4.48 40-yard dash and is a consensus four-star recruit, though he has been clocked at sub-4.4 times in the past. Scout considers him a three-star prospect and the No. 14 player at his position in the class, while 247Sports rates him a four-star player and the No. 27 cornerback.

Scouting report

Some defensive back coaches prefer big, strong, physical safeties. For those who prefer more scheme versatility, players like Springs become top targets. Capable of running the alley in run support and manning up on the best receivers from other teams, the San Antonio product as the overall speed to play cornerback in college, though his technique, particularly his footwork, needs some refinement.

What was impressive to see during a live viewing at a 7on7 event last summer was just how physical Springs was willing to get. Though such settings technically forbid such contact, Springs wasn’t dissuaded.

Besides needing to add some overall polish to his game at cornerback, the biggest area for improvement is in tracking the football, a much easier task at safety than it is when locked up in man coverage. Several times Springs could have come up with interceptions had he been able to locate the pigskin during the in-person viewing, though strong winds made things substantially more difficult for all involved that day.

If Springs ends up in the Big 12, he could be an excellent nickel corner, using the best of his safety and cornerback skillsets.
