Lorenzo Joe, a wide receiver/quarterback prospect from Abilene (Texas) Cooper High School, is a consensus four-star prospect and one of the top players from his state in the class of 2014. He has scholarship offers from Texas and Texas Tech, and he also has received interest from Oklahoma and Oklahoma State, among others. He committed to Texas in August of 2012.

Joe is 6’3 and weighs 183 pounds; he is considered a four-star prospect by Scout, Rivals and 247Sports. In 2012, Joe threw for 1,988 yards, 14 touchdowns and three interceptions, and also ran for nearly 800 yards. In 2011, he spent the bulk of his time at receiver and racked up 762 yards on 48 receptions.

Scouting report

Evaluating Joe as a prospect has gotten more difficult in the last year with his move to quarterback for Cooper, leaving only his running ability as the truly assessable element of his game in projecting him to the next level.

Physically, Joe has a strong combination of size and speed. He’s tall enough at 6’3 to play outside in college and present a big target for his quarterback on third downs and in the redzone. Well built already at 185 pounds, Joe should eventually play at around 200 pounds in college and keep his reported 4.53 speed in the 40-yard dash.

As a runner, what stands out about Joe is how fluid he is for a player of his size -- he’s capable of changing direction like a shorter player, which should give him some upside after the catch when he reaches college.

Playing receiver as a sophomore, Joe showed the ability to track the ball in the air to make adjustments on the passes thrown from current Texas Tech Red Raider Clayton Nicholas, and also had the spatial awareness to work along the sideline and make catches while staying in bounds, an important quality for an outside receiver to possess.

And though most of the skills Joe is currently using at the quarterback position won’t translate, his understanding of defenses and coverages will provide a wider look at the game that should help him find holes in zone coverage.
