Frank Herron will stick with LSU after surprise Texas visit

The longtime Tiger pledge visited Austin last weekend.

The LSU Tiger coaching staff probably wasn’t especially happy to hear that five-star defensive end commit Frank Herron was visiting Austin this last weekend, but Herron will reportedly sign with the Tigers on Wednesday, as planned.

The 6-5, 230-pound defensive end enjoyed his visit to Austin, according to all reports, a trip that was made at the last minute because of his connection to new Texas running back coach Larry Porter, who recruited the Memphis native while he was at Memphis and then at Arizona State last year when Porter was the running back coach there.

The Longhorns now won’t have a true defensive end in the 2013 class after weakside prospect Daeshon Hall decommitted in June of 2012, though Celina (Texas) lineman Jake Raulerson, who is already enrolled, will probably start out at the position.

Besides the longtime commitment to LSU and that fact that Mama Herron wasn’t able to make the trip, the availability of early playing time in Baton Rouge surely continued to be an appeal for Herron, as both starting defensive ends will not be back for the 2013 season.

Texas, on the other hand, features more depth there, with Jackson Jeffcoat expected to return from another pectoral injury and experienced contributors Cedric Reed and Reggie Wilson vying for the other starting spot.

Herron is considered one of the 100 best players in the nation and the no. 7 strongside defensive end by the 247Sports composite rankings.
