Montrel Meander commits to Texas, flipping from Washington State

Just when it looked like the ‘Horns might come up empty closing with a wide receiver in 2013, they flipped an official visitor from the weekend.

Jake Roth-US PRESSWIRE

The Texas Longhorns had been looking all across the country for a vertical threat at wide receiver to close out the 2013 recruiting class there and finally found their man on Monday evening, successfully flipping Amarillo (Texas) Palo Duro wide receiver/safety Montrel Meander from the Washington State Cougars.

The newly-minted four-star prospect is 6-3 and 180 lean pounds and committed to Washington State following an official visit in the middle of January, but saw his recruitment pick up in recent days with the interest from Texas and offers from Cal, Missouri, and Texas Tech.

How wild has it been for him recently? How about this:

So the Longhorns were able to flex some recruiting muscle in this instance (yeah, they still have a little), bringing out Earl Campbell and Vince Young to help with Meander’s official visit.

There was some speculation that Meander might opt to stay with the Cougars because of a preference to play free safety, the position at which they were recruiting him and the presence of his close friend Charleston White, who is also committed to Mike Leach and company.

Meander is the 15th commitment in the 2013 class and the third receiver to pledge, joining Cypress (Texas) Falls’ Jacorey Warrick and Dallas (Texas) Jesuit’s Jake Oliver.
