The Alabama Crimson Tide capitalized on efforts to recruit in the Lone Star State when 2013 Sugar Land (Texas) Dulles defensive back Maurice Smith signed and faxed his letter of intent to the Tide.

The consensus four-star prospect participated in the 2013 Under Armour All-American game and committed to Alabama in June of 2012 after visiting for the spring game and a summer camp.

At 5’11.5 and 185 pounds, Smith has excellent size for a cornerback, the position at which 247Sports and Rivals have him projected, but the Dulles product doesn’t have ideal top-end speed to play corner, so he may project better as a safety. Even if Smith doesn’t have the pure speed, he’s a fluid, smooth player willing to play with the toughness necessary to take on bigger wide receivers and win at the line of scrimmage, something that translates to his tackling ability as well. A two-way prospect in high school, Smith has the ball skills and ability to go up and get the football that should allow him to finish plays with interceptions in college.

Ratings: 247Sports composite ranking four-star prospect, ninth-ranked cornerback, 84th overall nationally

Vitals: 5’11.5, 185

Other offers: Arizona State, Arkansas, Baylor, Florida, Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Ole Miss, Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Utah, Vanderbilt

Recruitment timeline: Smith committed to Alabama in June and remained firm throughout the rest of the process.
