Lavon Hooks enrolled at Ole Miss: top JUCO defensive tackle a Rebel

Hooks is an early enrollee at Ole Miss and one of the headliners of an impressive 2013 recruiting class.

Spruce Derden-US PRESSWIRE

Defensive tackle Lavon Hooks, from Northeast Mississippi Community College, decided to stay in-state and is now enrolled at Ole Miss, which will allow him to participate in spring drills. Hooks had previously named the Rebels as his leader after an official visit to Oxford in late November.

During his final season at Northeast Mississippi, Hooks had 51 tackles, including 9.5 sacks. He finished the year with a total of 20.5 tackles for loss, and he also forced three fumbles. He is considered the top overall junior college player in the 2013 class by 247Sports.

With all the talk about Robert Nkemdiche potentially committing to Ole Miss Wednesday morning, it is Hooks who might have the largest impact on the field in 2013. Hooks is an excellent recruit, and some believe him to be not just the top defensive tackle recruit in 2013, but the top overall junior college player regardless of position.

Ratings: His is a four-star prospect according to Rivals, and a five-star prospect according to 247Sports.

Vitals: He is 6’4” and weighs 295 pounds.

Other offers: Washington, Baylor, Arizona State, Nebraska, Auburn, Oklahoma

Recruitment timeline: Hooks took official visits to Nebraska, Arizona State and Baylor last November, but it was Ole Miss that had the most positive impression on him, and he ended up committing to the Rebels in December. Given Ole Miss’ proximity to NMCC, and their history of working with junior colleges, it is no surprise that the Rebels landed Hooks.
