The Texas Longhorns have had trouble finding high school offensive linemen who can stick at tackle over the last several years of recruiting, but added a big potential piece for the future on National Signing Day when Lake Highlands (Texas) bookend Kent Perkins signed and faxed in his letter of intent.

A consensus four-star prospect rated as the third-best offensive tackle prospect in the country by the 247Sports composite ranking, Perkins showed well in practice at the 2013 US Army All-American Bowl:

Lake Highlands offensive tackle Kent Perkins -- Hookem.com analyst Jeff Howe raved all Monday about the feet of Perkins at right tackle. Athletic enough to pass set against strongside defensive ends or get out in space on screens, the 6-6, 300-pounder looks like a surefire tackle at the next level. For real this time -- Texas fans might be skeptical after so many players who were projected there ended up inside. And that is understandable. Just believe in Perkins.

At 6’6 and 300 lean pounds, Perkins looks like a prototypical tackle prospect and held offers from the likes of Arkansas, Baylor, LSU, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, and Texas A&M.

He’s part of a talented Texas offensive line class that also includes the top JUCO offensive tackle by 247Sports in Desmond Harrison, physical guard Rami Hammad, top-rated guard Darius James, and Jake Raulerson, who may start out at defensive end, but has a greater upside as a future interior lineman.

Recruitment timeline: After visiting for the second Texas Junior Day in late February, Perkins committed to Texas shortly thereafter and remained firm throughout the process, declining to take other visits.
