Cody Thomas signs with Oklahoma: Sooners’ next star QB recruit?

The Sooners may have their quarterback of the future, as long as they can get him on campus.

Wescott Eberts (SB Nation)

The Oklahoma Sooners secured a potentially big piece of their future at quarterback when they inked 2013 Colleyville (Texas) Heritage signal-caller Cody Thomas on Wednesday.

The only problem is that Thomas is a big-time outfield prospect and could end up choosing to go pro instead of making it to Norman. When SB Nation Recruiting spoke with Thomas and his father last May at a 7on7 qualifying tournament, the elder Thomas made it sound as if his son was locked in to heading to college, but those plans could always change if the right team selects him in the right round.

At 6-5, 210 pounds, Thomas is a consensus four-star prospect who had offers from schools like Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, LSU, Notre Dame, Oregon, USC, and numerous others.

Considered a pro-style prospect, part of what makes Thomas such an appealing prospect is that fact that he’s highly athletic, something he wasn’t always able to show as a junior because his coach was protecting from further injury after Thomas suffered ligament damage in a finger on his throwing hand.

As a senior Thomas threw for over 4,000 yards and 46 touchdowns, with only six interceptions. He also rushed for three scores, cementing his place as one of the top 10 pro-style quarterback prospects in the country by 247Sports and the top quarterback in the state of Texas in a strong class.
