Jared Goff enrolled at Cal: Marin quarterback ready to throw, thrive in Sonny Dykes’ offense

Cal quarterback Jared Goff will be one of many Golden Bears looking to become the first who can lead the dynamic and explosive offense coached by Sonny Dykes and Tony Franklin.

The California Golden Bears have been on a downward slide the past few years, with much of the problems centering on the offense and inconsistencies at the quarterback position. Cal hopes Jared Goff can be part of the solution.

Despite the firing of head coach Jeff Tedford, Goff has remained a firm Cal commit throughout the process and has already enrolled early with the Bears. Goff's father was a baseball player at Cal, so he's already well steeped in the tradition of Berkeley as a legacy recruit.

At Marin Catholic, Goff operated in a shotgun-heavy offense that required him to pass the football a lot. In Sonny Dykes' new offense, he will operate within a scheme that is also shotgun heavy and relies a lot more on offenses with multiple running backs, so it could be a smooth transition.

California Golden Blogs (our Cal SB Nation site) wrote a scouting report up on Goff prior to his senior season. Here is a snippet below.

Clearly he has a good arm; he has no trouble with deep balls and frequently hits his targets in stride. Also encouraging is his 64% accuracy, especially considering how often he throws. He has good mechanics, which is a testament to his athleticism. Also, just like Kyle Boehm and Zack Kline before him, Goff is a protege of renowned QB coach Roger Theder. I found Jared to be much more mobile than I expected him to be. He shows good mobility in the pocket, is able to evade a rush, and isn’t afraid to tuck and run if necessary. This should not have come as a shock to me, as Jared is a three sport athlete (football, basketball and baseball) and that athleticism shines through in the way he plays the quarterback position.

Goff has only improved since that point, getting stronger and better. Goff was selected as one of the Elite 11 quarterbacks in the summer. He’s also showed off his wheels a lot more and proven he can not only be accurate in spreading the football around but also take off with the football and pick up yards that way. Goff is on campus as an early enrollee and will be all set to participate in spring practice.

Goff will be part of a sizable spring rotation of quarterbacks that includes Allan Bridgford, Austin Hinder, Kyle Boehm and Zach Kline. If Goff can work his way onto the depth chart, it would be an incredible accomplishment for a true freshman.

Ratings: Goff is a consensus four-star quarterback.

Vitals: Goff measures at 6’4 and weighs in at 190 pounds.

Other Offers: Goff’s offer list is short because he committed early on in the process, with Boise State, Washington State and Fresno State all presenting offers.

Recruitment timeline: Goff committed to Cal soon after receiving his offer from the Bears.
