Robbie Rhodes signs with Baylor over Texas, others

The Baylor Bears have made their living taking underrecruited receivers and turning them into collegiate stars, but landed a bona fide star when they signed Fort Worth (Texas) Southwest speedster Robbie Rhodes on Wednesday.

The 6-1, 190-pound receiver was an Under Armour All-American and received offers from Oklahoma, Texas, TCU, Texas A&M, and Texas Tech.

A track star and consensus five-star prospect, 247Sports ranks Rhodes as the top prospect in the state of Texas and the second-best wide receiver in the entire country.

Rhodes has the skillset to become an excellent deep threat in college -- he’s exceptionally fluid and both sudden with his first step and incredibly fast at the top-end, a combination that made him extremely hard to stop in high school. He also has a natural ability to get open and to set up defensive backs to get open. In all, Rhodes is an outstanding prospect who should translate his game easily and quickly to the college level.

In one game as a junior, Rhodes recorded 10 catches for 394 yards, eight of which went for touchdowns, which tied a national record and set the state mark in Texas.

In Baylor’s high-octane attack, perhaps it’s not entirely out of the question that he could replicate such a performance in college.

Recruitment timeline: Rhodes committed to Baylor in June of 2012 and remained firm throughout the process, though teams like Texas continued their attempts to recruit him throughout the process.
