Elijah Daniel signs with Auburn over Ole Miss in Signing Day surprise

Auburn pulls off the shocker after receiving the final visit.

Elijah Daniel, a star defensive end, signed with Auburn Wednesday on National Signing Day, just weeks after committing to the Ole Miss Rebels.

Daniel is one of the top ten defensive end prospects in his class, at 6’3 and 240 pounds, and with the ability to run a 4.82 40-yard dash. He’s a consensus four-star recruit, with ESPN ranking him No. 4 amongst players at his position. Here’s what SB Nation’s recruiting analyst Bud Elliott had to say about Daniel after watching him at the Under Armour All-American game:

Daniel, a one-time Clemson commitment, really looks the part. Continuing the trend of powerful ends, Daniel checks in at a listed 6’3 and 249 pounds but appears to be bigger than that.

The one time Clemson recruit is a big get for Gus Malzahn.

Daniel’s recruiting story is a long one: the Avon, Indiana native was originally committed to Clemson back in June, making him one of what had originally looked like a big haul for the Tigers. That got Clemson fans at Shakin’ the Southland excited, but it was short lived. They realized something was amiss and that loads of players were on the verge of decommitting, and Daniel was one. Back in October, Daniel tweeted that he was decommitting -- he wasn’t, saying he was hacked -- but the writing was on the wall. In January, he committed to Ole Miss, adding to Hugh Freeze’s unreal class. Ole Miss blog Red Cup Rebellion recorded a segment about Daniel’s commitment, along with that of Laquan Treadwell.
