Derrick Griffin will not sign with Texas A&M

The Aggies declined to let him sign a letter of intent.

The Texas A&M Aggies were hoping that 2013 Rosenberg (Texas) Terry wide receiver Derrick Griffin might end up taking care of his business to the extent that he could qualify, but that did not happen and the Aggies have not sent him a letter of intent to sign ($).

There was some talk back in January that Griffin will end up at Blinn, but it’s not yet known where he will end up. An ACT is on tap for him, so there’s an outside chance that he could still qualify to enroll at the school of his choice next fall.

On Tuesday evening, Griffin sounded intent on getting himself to College Station at some point:

A consensus four-star prospect and 2013 US Army All-American, the 6-6, 228-pound Griffin is also a basketball star and was ranked as the no. 5 wide receiver nationally by the 247Sports composite rankings, as well as the no. 7 player in the state of Texas. He held offers from Auburn, Baylor, Notre Dame, and USC.

Here’s the evaluation on Griffin from a summer 7-on-7 tournament:

At over 6-6, Griffin stands out among his peers at 7on7 events, just as he does on the basketball court. Early in the day, he struggled dropping passes, failing to secure a would-be touchdown on a leaping grab in the endzone that he failed to control in traffic and letting another getting into his chest by not attacking the football.

At times, it looked like he was going through the motions with his effort level, especially if he didn’t think the football was headed in his direction. Still, he showcased his elite ball skills on several plays, extending his long arms over defenders and at other times looking like a post player establishing position on the basketball court before attacking the football.

Though Griffin is not as fast as fellow Texas prospect Ricky Seals-Jones of Sealy, who also stars on the hardwood, Griffin does have the ability to hit an extra gear when necessary and notably ran away from a Katy defensive back on one play. Besides his hands, which were shaky at times, Griffin needs to work on running more precise routes, which is normally difficult for receivers of his size.

If Griffin can take care of his academics wherever he ends up and get qualified, he could represent a fantastic pick-up for some school down the road, be it Texas A&M or someone else.

Recruitment timeline: Griffin committed to Texas A&M in early 2012, but there have been questions about his ability to qualify throughout the process.
