2015 DT Bryce English commits to the Texas Longhorns

The Texas Longhorns got their 2015 recruiting class started last weekend with the pledge of Sherman (Texas) offensive lineman Aaron Garza and continued their early run of success in the trenches by securing the commitment of DeSoto (Texas) defensive tackle Bryce English on Friday:

English had received his offer earlier in the day and didn’t take long to end his recruitment. His ties to the Texas program probably helped make the decision easy -- DeSoto has been a pipeline school for Texas for some time and has sent numerous prospects to Austin in recent years, but more than that, English is the godson of Texas tight ends coach/recruiting coordinator Bruce Chambers.

After his commitment English, spent some time with other Texas commits and spent more time with head coach Mack Brown:

It seems that English’s newfound status as a Longhorn pledge helped him draw some attention on Saturday:

The offer from the ‘Horns was the first for the rather undersized defensive tackle who is listed at 5’11 and just over 300 pounds. His height makes him the shortest defensive tackle recruited by Texas since Ben Alexander in the 2006 class.

However, English is known as more than the anchoring player that his height and weight would suggest -- he’s considered a quick, disruptive prospect who can use the leverage created by his lack of height to beat bigger opponents who have trouble getting under his pads to slow him down.

Defensive tackle is a major need for the ‘Horns after they failed to sign a player at the position in the 2013 class. In the 2014, several of the top defensive tackles in the state are already off the board, including Nederland’s DeShawn Washington, who committed to A&M while holding an offer from Texas.

The need may have made the coaching staff more willing to offer and accept a commitment from English so early in the process, though the Sophomore Day last weekend and the events surrounding the Texas spring game this weekend have resulted in the earliest offers ever extended by Mack Brown and his staff.
