Jake McMillon commits to the Texas Longhorns

The ‘Horns added a third 2014 prospect in the last three days.

The biggest recruiting weekend for the Texas Longhorns in some time stretched into Monday morning with the pledge of Abilene (Texas) defensive end Jake McMillon, whose coach told ESPN that his player had decided to end his recruitment.

A 6-3, 240-pounder ranked as a consensus three-star prospect, McMillon is on his way to becoming a four-year starter for Abilene. Considered a strongside defensive end, McMillon is ranked as the no. 29 prospect nationally at his position in the 247Sports Composite ranking, as well as the 111th player overall in the state of Texas.

However, as a prospect with a solid frame that can add some weight, the Abilene product could end up playing some as a five-technique defensive end in 3-4 looks or a three-technique defensive tackle on a four-man line, depending upon how he develops physically.

His head coach, Steve Warren, essentially confirmed those thoughts to Orangebloods:

He has great explosion, great strength. And he’s a tremendous kid, a really good kid. He’s versatile. He can play a lot of places on the defensive line. I know (Texas) likes to move their guys around, and he has the speed to play on the edge and he’s plenty strong and can play inside. I kind of think that’s what they liked about him is that he can help out in different areas.

Prior to his commitment to Texas, Rivals reports that he held offers from Rice, SMU, TCU, and Texas State. In recent weeks, McMillon had narrowed his choices to the Longhorns and Horned Frogs and made his decision after visiting Austin for the spring game over the weekend. He also took a trip to TCU for practice last week.

The 11th commitment in the class for the Longhorns, McMillon recorded 42 tackles, 13 sacks, two forced fumbles, and two fumble recoveries during his junior season. Texas also holds commitments from two other defensive linemen -- longtime pledge Derick Roberson, a defensive end from San Antonio (Texas) Brennan and weekend commitment Trey Lealaimatafao, a defensive tackle from San Antonio (Texas) Warren.
