Johnny Dwight commits to Alabama

The big defensive tackle is taking his talents to Tuscaloosa.

Dave Martin

Georgia-based defensive tackle Johnny Dwight has given his verbal commitment to the University of Alabama, according to Rodney Orr of Tider Insider:

He is a consensus three-star prospect, with three-star ratings from Rivals, Scout, and 24/7. ESPN has not yet graded Dwight. The big tackle chose Alabama over offers from LSU and North Carolina. None of the scouting services have ranked Dwight among the top prospects nationally, and both 24/7 and Rivals have him 40th among defensive tackles.

Dwight is a 6'3, 298-lb. defensive tackle out of Wilcox County High School in Rochelle, Georgia. Wilcox County High School previously produced receiver Jonathan Howard, who chose North Carolina, and quarterback Nick Marshall, who chose Georgia before running into troubles, transferring to junior college, and transferring to Auburn. Given Dwight's size, he is a likely candidate to play the five-technique end position in Alabama's 3-4 defense, as opposed to nose guard, which requires a larger frame.

National recruiting analyst Bud Elliott notes that Dwight is a good example of just how premature recruiting rankings are in June. With offers from powerhouses Alabama and LSU, Dwight’s rating remains at three stars on most recruiting services.

The addition of Dwight brings Alabama’s 2014 recruiting class to eight commits, including six players with consensus four-star ratings.
