Purdue gets 4-star OLB Drue Tranquill

Purdue’s 2014 class has one of the best quarterbacks in the country and a pair of four-star defenders, now including safety/linebacker Drue Tranquill. Is Darrell Hazell turning things around in West Lafayette?

Pat Lovell-US PRESSWIRE

The uptick in Purdue recruiting under new head coach Darrell Hazell appears to be real: the Boilermakers have landed their third player in the Class of 2014 ranked as a four-star by one or more scouting services, Ft. Wayne (Ind.) Carroll safety/linebacker Drue Tranquill.

Tranquill, a 6’3, 207-pounder, doesn’t exactly have the offer list of a four-star player -- Minnesota, Cincinnati, and Indiana are the main non-MAC schools that were pursuing him -- but he’s ranked as the No. 25 safety in the country and No. 5 player in Indiana per 247’s composite, as well as the No. 27 outside linebacker according to Scout. He’s the ninth player in a class that started off very slowly, but has picked up steam.

Tranquill joins David Blough, the quarterback who surprisingly stole the show at the Elite 11 camp at Nike’s The Opening, and Gelen Robinson, defensive end and son of former Purdue basketball star Glenn, as the gems of Hazell’s first true class in West Lafayette. They join 2013 QB Danny Etling as four-star gets for Purdue The Boilermakers only landed one player ranked as a four-star in 247’s composite in Danny Hope’s entire tenure.
