Quincy Wilson talks recruiting at The Opening

The four-star defensive back from Florida has his list down to 13.

Fort Lauderdale-based defensive back recruit Quincy Wilson took a moment to discuss his recruitment with SB Nation’s Bud Elliott at Nike’s The Opening 2013 Wednesday. The man has a proper appreciation for free socks.

Wilson is a consensus four-star defensive back, though opinions on him have been mixed. Rivals gives Wilson four stars and ranks him among the nation’s top 150 players. 24/7, on the other hand, sees Wilson as a three-star prospect, and ranks him outside the top 100 players in the state of Florida. He has narrowed his list to 13 programs: Georgia, South Carolina, UCLA, USC, Ohio State, LSU, Alabama, NC State, Florida, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Louisville, and Vanderbilt. Conspicuous in its absence: Miami, where Wilson’s father, Chad, played cornerback.

Bud Elliott’s opinion of Wilson varies depending on his eventual position:

He excels at press coverage and really bullies receiver at the line of scrimmage, sometimes even driving them back behind the line. But Wilson does not have the same speed or lateral agility as other elite cornerback recruits. And he doesn’t look all that natural at cornerback.

Can Wilson stay at cornerback in college? It’s possible, and will depend on the style of defense played by the school to which he commits. If he finds a system that can take advantage of his length and power, and minimize how often he is asked to cover downfield, it could work.

It could also be that Wilson continues to grow and add muscle, and that he moves to safety. If that is the case, he profiles as a big safety, but with plus range for his size.
