Florida State recruiting: DE Rick Leonard commits to Seminoles over Clemson

Florida State’s class is already one of the best in the country, and it adds a huge defensive end.

Melina Vastola-USA TODAY Sports

Florida State landed a commitment from a physically imposing pass rusher Tuesday, as 6’7, 260-pound defensive end Rick Leonard pledged to the Seminoles over a host of other options, including conference rival Clemson.

Leonard, who hails from Middletown (Md.), has a Seminole pedigree, with a father and grandmother who graduated from FSU. He’s a consensus three-star commit, with 247’s composite ranking him as the No. 25 strongside defensive end in the nation and the No. 15 player in his state. Other ACC offers included his homestate school of Maryland as well as Virginia, Pittsburgh and Boston College, but Leonard also had offers from across the nation, including Ole Miss, Wisconsin, Nebraska, Tennessee, and even Pac-12 schools like Washington and Arizona.

Leonard is the 24th member of a monster haul for Jimbo Fisher, ranking as the No. 4 class in the nation according to the composite rankings. Leonard is the second defensive end, but four-star defensive tackles Demarcus Christmas and Dexter Wideman make the line one of the strongest parts of the Noles’ class of 2014.
