Penn State football recruiting: Nittany Lions almost done with 2014 class

With recruiting sanctions weighing heavy, Penn State has just three scholarship slots left for its 2014 recruiting class.

Matthew O’Haren-USA TODAY Sports

With the heavy recruiting sanctions on Penn State, the Nittany Lions are now limited to 15 scholarships per recruiting class, meaning Bill O’Brien has to choose his class very carefully.

Penn State’s class is nearly filled, with 12 commitments so far in the recruiting season. With three four-stars and nine three-stars, the Nittany Lions rank 30th in the 247sports composite team rankings and fourth in the conference.

Top stars

O’Brien has been quiet of late on the recruiting front, not receiving a commitment since three-star defensive tackle Antoine White pledged to the program in early July. Penn State’s class focuses heavily on the passing game, with all three of its big names coming at either wide receiver or quarterback.

Chris Godwin is one of the top recruits in the class. The wide receiver from Middletown (Del.) High School is considered a four-star prospect. He is rated as the best player in the state and the 29th-best receiver in the nation.

DeAndre Thompkins is another big get for the Nittany Lions. The wide receiver from Swansboro (N.C.) High School is also a four-star prospect. He is considered the 34th-best wide receiver in the nation and the 11th-best player in the state.

Michael O’Connor is considered one Penn State’s top commitments. The quarterback from IMG Academy (Fla). is considered a four-star prospect. He is rated as the 13th-best pro-style quarterback in the nation, and as the 35th-best player in the state.

On target

The top Penn State target is Montae Nicholson, a versatile athlete from Monroeville (Pa.) Gateway High School. Nicholson can play receiver or defensive back, is a consensus four-star, and is also receiving interest from Penn Michigan, Pitt and Florida State.
