Indiana football recruiting 2013: still work to be done

The Hoosiers have brought in a load of defensive linemen, but still sit 10th in the conference recruiting rankings.

Brian Spurlock-US PRESSWIRE

Thus far, Indiana has the 10th-ranked recruiting class in the Big Ten, and is 73rd in the country, according to the 247sports composite. At this point, the Hoosiers are looking both for star power and for numbers -- they have one of the smallest classes in the conference so far, and their average recruit score of 82.17 is the worst in the conference. As it stands, Minnesota and Purdue are projected to pass the Hoosiers in the rankings with just a couple more commitments.

It’s been a slow couple of months for the Hoosiers, recruiting wise. Indiana hasn’t added a new recruit since July, when it received commitments from four future Hoosiers -- defensive end Nick Carovillano from Cincinnati (Ohio) St. Xavier, cornerback Donovan Clark out of Fort Wayne (Ind.) South Side, defensive tackle Jermane Conyers from Rossville (Ga.) Ridgeland and wide receiver J-Shun Harris from Fishers (Ind.) Fishers High. Carovilliano, Clark and Conyers are all three-star recruits on the 247sports composite, with Carovilliano being the highest rated of the three -- the 6’4, 245-pound end is a top 40 player at his position this year.

The defensive line has been a major focus of this recruiting cycle, as the Hoosiers have added four defensive linemen among their 10 recruits. Joining Carovillano and Conyers there are two other future Hoosiers who committed earlier: defensive tackle Michael Barwick and Augusta (Ga.) Academy of Richmond County defensive end Willie Yarbary. Barwick, from Cincinnati (Ohio) Summit Country Day School, is Indiana’s highest-rated recruit on the 247sports composite and is the 60th-ranked defensive tackle in the country.
