Jamarco Jones recruit scouting report: Big tackle finishes his blocks

Jones is one of the top offensive line prospects in his class. Here’s our scouting report on him.

Bud Elliott SB Nation

After being pursued by schools from all over the country, Jamarco Jones committed to the Ohio State Buckeyes on June 27. The Under Armour All-American received nearly 30 scholarship offers and made visits to a handful of Big Ten schools, including Michigan, Michigan State and Wisconsin.

A 6’5, 290-pound offensive tackle, Jones imposed his will along the line at De La Salle Institute in Chicago this past year. He’s ranked as a four-star prospect by 247Sports Composite rankings, coming in as the 60th-best prospect in the country. He’s also rated as the No. 5 offensive tackle in the 2014 recruiting class, as well as the third-best prospect from the state of Illinois. ESPN, Rivals and Scout all have Jones as a four-star prospect as well, listing him among their top 110 recruits.

You can follow Jamarco on Twitter: @jjones_73. Here are some impressive highlights of Jones in action last season.

Bud Elliott, National Recruiting Analyst: There is a lot to like about Jamarco Jones. As with any lineman, the first thing to evaluate is size. Jones is very well put together at close to 6’5 and 300 pounds, although I am not sure if he has great length.

Jones is able to bend his knees and drop his weight into a block, as opposed to bending at the waist. I also like that Jones will move his feet through initial contact and finish off his opponent. He isn’t satisfied with simply making a block. After talking with him this summer and finding him to be a nice, laid-back kid, I was glad to see that he turns on the nasty between the white lines. When I saw Jones this summer, he had just had shoulder surgery, but he did end up playing as a senior and his highlights are quite impressive.

There are some plays in that highlight in which Jones shows impressive balance and agility, which bodes well for his future. I am not sure about him as a pass protector, not because I doubt that he can be a good one, but because I have not seen it.

I think Jones is one of the 10 or 15 best offensive tackle recruits in the 2014 class. I do not think he is one of the five best.
