Kyle Allen Recruit Scouting Report: Elite quarterback

Allen is one of the top prospects in the nation. Here is our scouting report on the star quarterback.

USA TODAY Sports

Kyle Allen, a five-star quarterback out of Desert Mountain High school in Scottsdale, Ariz., committed to the Texas A&M Aggies in June before his senior season began. A pro style quarterback at 6'2 and 190 pounds, Allen could be the heir to Johnny Manziel's throne in College Station.

According to 24/7Sports composite rankings, Allen is the 14th-best overall prospect in his class. He’s viewed as the top pro style QB in 2014, as well as the top player in the state of Arizona. Rivals and Scout both have him as the No. 1 quarterback in his class, though ESPN has him ranked 55th nationally and as a four-star recruit. Allen received heavy interest from schools all over the country, including Alabama, Boise State, Notre Dame and Ohio State, in addition to most Pac-12 schools. He received upwards of 20 scholarship offers.

Bud Elliott, National Recruiting Analyst: Allen is a fantastic prospect. He has adequate size to succeed at the highest levels of college football. He’s a bright guy, who really has an advanced understanding of football for a high school player. And now that he has enrolled early, he’ll get some advanced work on that right away.

Arm strength is overrated unless a player doesn’t have it. Allen definitely has arm strength. But that’s not what makes him a special prospect. That would be his accuracy and ball placement. Allen makes a really high percentage of his throws not only to the correct receiver, but to a spot that allows the receiver to run with the football after the catch. There’s accuracy, and then there is accuracy within the target. Allen also does a great job of using the right amount of velocity on each throw, putting it into tight windows, both horizontal and vertical, particularly over defenders in the second level.
