Jacob Pugh Recruit Scouting Report

Pugh is one of the top linebackers in his class. Here’s our scouting report on him.

Bud Elliott

Jacob Pugh, an outside linebacker out of Amos P. Godby High School in Tallahassee, Fla., committed to the Florida State Seminoles back in May. He held offers from most SEC schools and a couple others from around the country, but he ultimately decided he wanted to play for the hometown Seminoles. Here is a deeper look at his recruitment.

Pugh checks in at 6’4, 220 pounds and features a strong frame that should allow him to continue playing linebacker in college. He’s a four-star recruit, according to 24/7Sports’ composite rankings. They rank him as the 66th-best prospect in the 2014 class, as well as the No. 5 outside linebacker and the ninth-best player from the state of Florida. Pugh is viewed by other recruiting networks as a four-star prospect as well, with ESPN, Rivals and Scout all ranking him somewhere among their top-150 players.

Here are some highlights of Pugh in action last year:

Bud Elliott, SB Nation Recruiting: Pugh is a very good football player, and is one of the ten best linebackers I have seen in the 2014 class, inside or out. As you can see in the photo below, Pugh has the frame that will enable him to eventually be a special player. He’s wide and long, and can play at 250+ pounds after a year or two in a college strength program. Pugh has the length and strength to take on blocks and hold the edge as an outside linebacker in a 3-4 defense. He is a solid wrap tackler and brings his legs on contact. And he has upside as a pass rusher, blitzing from the outside. Pugh also picks through traffic well when moving from side to side through a defense, and he has plus agility, which I saw when watching him adjust to balls while taking reps at tight end during a summer camp.

My questions about Pugh are about his instincts and in pass coverage.
