Cameron Sims recruit scouting report: Herman Moore clone at receiver

Cameron Sims is among the most talented of a strong 2014 senior class in the state of Louisiana, where the 6’4, 199 pound wideout plays his high school ball at Monroe (La.) Ouachita Parish.

Sims is a consensus four-star prospect, according to the four major recruiting services. ESPN is the highest on Sims, ranking him as the eighth-best wide receiver prospect in the 2014 class. 247Sports lists Sims as the 15th-ranked player at his position and Scout’s ranking of 15th isn’t far behind. Rivals ranks him 31st.

As of December, Sims had offers from Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Nebraska, Notre Dame, Oklahoma State, Southern Cal, Washington, Ole Miss, and Arkansas.

Derrell Warren, West Coast Recruiting Analyst: (@yysd): Sims is taller recruit at the receiver position at 6’4”. Most recruiting services list his weight in the neighborhood of 200 pounds. From a frame perspective, he has both a narrow hip and shoulder base, so he probably wouldn’t be projected to work his way north of 215 pounds.

Sims is a bit of a tight mover. His speed is more of the built-up variety. Would estimate his 40 time to be in the low 4.6 range. In pads however, he shows a bit of downfield burst once he gets going, especially in his last few steps prior to the catching the ball. Has a smooth gait. And though not a burner, he eats up ground with his long strides.

Sims is one of the more natural pass catchers in this class. He has great instincts and feel for the position. Will need to expand his route tree at the next level as he isn’t overly explosive coming out of his breaks.

At the next level Sims will have to create airspace between himself and defenders with the preciseness of his routes. Not to mention mastering certain nuances of the position. This is key if he is to develop into a true volume receiver as opposed to more of complimentary type. Third down and red zone situations are two areas in which he should be expected to thrive at once his earned significant reps.

Sims does have some issues creating separation downfield at the high school level. Probably not fair to expect that to be a prominent part of his game in college, especially early in his career. The high amount of contested catches on tape is definitely something to make note of.

Sims carries some of the best ball tracking skills you’ll find of any wide receiver recruit. His hands are huge and superb. He is similar to former Detroit Lion receiver Herman Moore in his ability to pluck the ball away from his frame at various angles. He seems to always win at the catch point. Has a huge catch radius considering his 6’4” frame, length, and his propensity to never let the ball get into his frame
