J.W. Ketchum has Texas, Auburn, and Nebraska on top

Are schools recruiting the speedy dual-threat quarterback as an athlete?

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- One of the top quarterbacks in attendance at the Texas State 7-on-7 Championships last week in College Station was Houston (Texas) Lamar’s J.W. Ketchum.

Ketchum spoke with SB Nation Recruiting about his recruitment and said that the Texas Longhorns, Auburn Tigers, and Nebraska Cornhuskers are the three schools standing out to him at this time. There is no current order for those schools.

The consensus three-star prospect and former Missouri City (Texas) Marshall standout said that all three schools are recruiting him as a quarterback, even though there are plenty in the industry who see him as a slot receiver or safety at the next level because of his athleticism and rawness at the position.

Since Ketchum wants to remain at quarterback, he said he’s not considering schools that are recruiting him to play other positions.

After changing schools this spring, the 6’0, 200-pounder said that he hasn’t been in contact much recently with the Texas coaching staff as he focuses on his short-term future. He is, however, planning on attending the Under the Lights camp that Texas is holding on July 18.

Ketchum likes the style of offense that Gus Malzahn runs with the Tigers and said that he likes the style of quarterbacks that Auburn recruits for that system. A trip to Auburn hasn’t happened yet, but the Lamar signal caller said that he would like to take an official visit there in the fall during football season.

Nebraska hasn’t yet received an official visit from Ketchum, either, but he also plans on making it to Lincoln on an official visit.

An announcement is currently planned for the US Army All-American game next January.

More so than what position Ketchum will play in college, the crucial element to his recruitment right now is how he handles himself off the field this fall after the circumstances that surrounded his departure from Marshall.

If he can take care of business this fall, he should be able to commit to one of the schools on his list. If not, he’ll likely find himself working through the junior college ranks.
