Duke beats USC for ... football recruit?

Yes, Duke!

Peter Casey-USA TODAY Sports

In yet another ho-hum day on the recruiting trail, Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski pulled in another four-star commitment, this time beating out USC for California tight end Tyler Petite. Wait ... what?

Oh my mistake, that was Duke football beating out USC for a kid from California, because the world makes no sense anymore.

Here’s Petite talking about that decision with 247 Sports:

"It was the whole vibe there and they way the guys stayed in contact after I left. It was just too good to pass up for me. I know Duke isn't a power house but they find ways to win some big games. Obviously the academics are there too so that prepares me for life after football."

No, Duke isn’t a powerhouse, and even recruits who pick the Blue Devils recognize that. However, there’s some serious momentum around the program. With noted quarterback guru David Cutcliffe at the helm, Duke made it to the ACC Championship game last year and turned heads in a thrilling near-upset of Texas A&M in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

A competitive program with a fun offense and great academics? Maybe in the near future, Duke-over-USC commitments won’t be so rare that they’re worthy of a post. In fact, there could be another one very soon, as California quarterback Sam Darnold has a USC offer, but is also high on Duke and fellow strong academic school Northwestern.

What a world we live in these days.
