George Campbell commits to Florida State: FSU lands 4-star recruit

One of the top talents in the state of Florida made his college decision Friday, when four-star wide receiver George Campbell chose Florida State over Florida and LSU.

From Tarpon Springs (Fla.) East Lake High School, Campbell also received offers from Alabama, Auburn, Oklahoma, USC and Ohio State, among others. Listed at 6’3 and 184 pounds, he is an elite athlete, especially for such a tall receiver. He is considered the 41st-best player in the nation by the 247Sports Composite, ranking him as the seventh-best player in the class and the 10th-best player in the state of Florida.

Here is the SB Nation scouting report on Campbell from February. Campbell is a freakish athlete, but needs major work on catching the football. If he doesn’t make serious progress in that area, he would also be a candidate to play safety.

He’s one of the top athletes in the country, and his commitment is the fifth of the top 10 prospects in the state of Florida.

Florida State is building another great class after its national championship, but wide receiver is a position the Seminoles could improve on in 2015. They brought in blue-chippers Ermon Lane and Travis Rudolph in 2014, and have other two wide receivers in this class -- four-star Auden Tate and three-star Nyqwan Murray. The Seminoles also have a commitment from Derwin James, the fifth-ranked player in the state, and become the only program with more than one top-10 Florida commitment.

Campbell is also an early enrollee, which will be important for the Seminoles, who will lose quite a bit off the 2015 team in all likelihood. Campbell says the only official visit he’ll make will be to Florida State for the Clemson game.

FSU is also considered a lock to land four-star receiver Da’Vante Phillips, of Miami Central.
