Miami’s 2016 recruiting class has 18 commits ... 11 months out

It’s safe to say the Hurricanes have gotten a jump on next year’s recruiting class.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

First, a few caveats:

1. National Signing Day is Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016. That’s over 11 months away from the date of this publishing.
2. Since a verbal commitment is not binding in any way, a lot will change between now and Wednesday, Feb. 3, 2016.
3. Recruiting rankings, while generally good indicators of future success, are not sure things by any stretch.

So, with all that in mind, the Miami Hurricanes landed their 18th commitment in their 2016 recruiting class on Wednesday in the person of three-star Fort Pierce (Fla.) Central linebacker Greg Simmons. The Hurricanes have the top-ranked class in the 2016 247Sports Composite rankings, and we should take a moment to appreciate just how silly their class is right now.

  • No other school in the country has more than nine 2016 commits. Miami has double the nearest competition.
  • Only three other schools -- Ole Miss, Mississippi State, and Kentucky -- have as many commits (eight) as Miami has four-star commits.
  • Not including Miami, only 33 teams in the country have three or more commits for the 2016 cycle. That’s out of 128.
  • Not counting UAB, which shut down its program, 13 teams out of 128 had 18 or fewer players in their final 2015 classes.

The Canes haven’t had a top-10 class since 2012, when their class was ranked 10th, but this is unquestionably a good start for Miami. Let’s see how long they can stay on top of the rankings.
