5-star Daylon Mack commits to Texas A&M on Signing Day

The No. 4 defensive tackle in the nation picked the Aggies from three listed finalists.

Jonathan Dyer-USA TODAY Sports

Daylon Mack, the No. 14 national recruit according to the 247Sports Composite, committed to Texas A&M on National Signing Day. Mack is a consensus five-star recruit who received an elite composite rating of 0.9915 and is listed as the No. 4 defensive tackle in the nation.

Texas, Texas A&M and TCU were officially listed as Mack’s finalists, but most experts agreed the Longhorns were out of the running. The battle for his services has been raging since he decommitted from Texas A&M in December, but he ended up returning to the fold in College Station. Our Wescott Eberts predicted Mack will land with the Aggies.

The Aggies have a desperate need for his talents after fielding subpar defenses in recent years, which ended up being superior to TCU’s record of developing defensive talent. For more A&M, visit Good Bull Hunting.

Mack is a 6’1, 330-pound run stuffer who racked up statistics in the backfield as well. In his final three seasons at Gladewater High School in Gladewater, Texas, Mack piled up 241 tackles, 89 tackles for loss, and 20 sacks.

The defensive tackle took official visits to each of the three schools he was considering, but canceled a scheduled visit to TCU in the final weekend before National Signing Day to stay home and make a final decision.

Mack is going to be type-cast as a nose tackle due to his size, but Bud Elliott said in a scouting report that the five-star recruit could also be a productive pass rusher from the interior:

The 310-pounder has incredible athletic ability for a player of his size -- Mack carries the weight of a nose tackle, but moves like a gap-penetrating three technique, an exceedingly rare combination. He also appears to re-direct well, not an easy task for someone over 300 pounds.

One of the more insane things an evaluator can see when watching high school prospects is Mack eluding defenders with quick feet and taking handoffs from the fullback position, finding a seam, and then running away from high school defenders for touchdowns with his top-end speed. At 310 pounds.
