Texas, Baylor stand out for 2016 lineman Urquidez

He nearly committed to Texas while on a visit.

Four-star offensive lineman JP Urquidez will be back in Copperas Cove, Texas, this year after playing last year at DeMatha Catholic in Maryland, and the star 2016 recruit has focused a lot of his recruiting on the South. Mostly, he’s focused on Texas, where the Longhorns and Baylor are his top two teams.

Urquidez visited Texas’ junior day and came close to committing, since he grew up a Longhorns fan with his whole family. However, he decided to wait on pulling the trigger.

“It was a good experience,” he said. “It was real cool. I got to see the program, got to talk to coach (Charlie) Strong more and get my relationship with him better, which is a good experience.”

Part of the reason Urquidez waited on committing was because there are other schools that have caught his eye, including Baylor. He’s going to Waco again soon and is excited to get back down there.

“I just really like it there,” he said. “The coaches treat me real well. I feel like I’m family already. The coaches talk to me like I already play there, and really just how comfortable I am there. I’ve been there a lot.”

Baylor is also good at putting offensive linemen in the NFL, which is a plus for the Bears and for another one of Urquidez’ top five schools, Miami. Oklahoma and UCLA are also in his top five.

Urquidez plans to commit before his junior year is over. He is rated as a four-star, according to the 247 Sports composite ratings, and he is rated as the 268th best player in the country and the 37th best player in the state of Texas.
