Last 2016 5-star football recruit, WR Demetris Robertson, commits to Cal

Robertson is ranked as the 14th-best player in the country, and his late addition gives the Golden Bears a top-25 freshman class.

Receiver Demetris Robertson, the last uncommitted five-star prospect in the class of 2016, has decided to play his college football at Cal, he announced Sunday.

The Savannah Christian Prep (Ga.) product is ranked as the top wide receiver in the country on the 247Sports Composite, as well as the third-ranked player in Georgia and the 14th-ranked player overall in the class of 2016. He’s not the biggest receiver, at 5’11.75 and 175 pounds, but he’s a very quick, agile player, which allowed him to dominate a seven-on-seven camp last year. He also has the ability to play cornerback in college.

Georgia seemed to be in a good position to land him, but ultimately, Robertson decided to head west, joining a modified air raid offense under head coach Sonny Dykes that should give him a lot of opportunities to thrive.

Robertson’s announcement was a little bit upside-down.

Initially, Robertson committed to Alabama, but he decommitted last April. He continued to look at the Crimson Tide, but he also kept Cal, Georgia, Stanford and Notre Dame in the mix. He decided not to attend his home-state school in Athens.

“I’m gonna be homesick a lot,” he said.

Over the past few weeks, the Bulldogs, Bears and Irish emerged as finalists after Robertson apparently didn’t qualify to get into Stanford. The entire timeline of his recruitment is a wacky one, and it’s finally reached an end.
