This seems like a good recruiting year for tight ends. The top one in the class of 2018, Ohio State commit Jeremy Ruckert, is the best tight end prospect in years. And there’s a lot of depth behind him, with talented flex and blocking tight ends who are going to be important offensive weapons for the next couple of seasons.
Flex TE Chigoziem Okonkwo commits to Maryland over Georgia Tech
Okonkwo’s a versatile threat in the class of 2018.
One of those is Chigoziem Okonkwo, a high three-star prospect from Hillgrove High School in Powder Springs, Ga. Okonkwo committed on Friday to the Terps over the home-state Yellow Jackets.
Okonkwo will be a great piece of an offensive puzzle. He’s 6’3 and about 225 pounds now, so he’s a little bit between a receiver and a tight end. But he’s a good, smooth athlete, and my guess is he’ll be able to contribute at either spot in college.
He models his game after that of Evan Engram, the former Ole Miss star who preceded him at Hillgrove and went 23rd overall to the Colts in April’s NFL draft.
“I grew up watching him play at my high school,” Okonkwo said earlier this summer from The Opening, a top showcase. “Really just watched him all throughout college.”

“Causing mismatch problems if I play the flex tight end position. You know, being able to stretch the field and open up plays going up against linebackers that can’t really cover me, and stuff like that. That’s what I think.”
