There are more than 3,000 freshmen playing major college football this season. That’s just a rough estimate, under the assumption that all 130 FBS teams have 25 scholarship true freshmen. Then you can sprinkle in a couple of freshman walk-ons per team, and you’re probably pushing about 4,000 true frosh in the FBS alone. Roughly.
If your college football team has one of these 8 freshmen, that’s great for you
The season’s here. Meet some rookies.

The video at the top of this post includes eight, in particular, who you should know. These are some of the four- and five-star studs of the class of 2017. They are:
- Five-star Georgia safety Richard LeCounte III, one of the best ball-hawking DB prospects to come out of the high school ranks in years
- Five-star Florida State running back Cam Akers, whose blend of power and speed could quickly remind FSU fans of Dalvin Cook
- Four-star Ohio State running back J.K. Dobbins, an athletic wunderkind who should get lots of work as the primary backup to starter Mike Weber
- Five-star Michigan receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones, who leads an impressive freshman crop of receivers who’ll be tasked with replacing a lot of production at that position
- Five-star Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who’s so good that he might get on the field this year despite Bama having a sophomore Jalen Hurts
- Five-star USC running back Stephen Carr, whose versatility and speed will make one of the country’s most dangerous offenses even more dangerous
- Five-star Clemson receiver Tee Higgins, whose play style — and eventually, his production — will remind Tiger fans of Mike Williams
- Five-star UCLA defensive end Jaelan Phillips, the No. 1 overall recruit in the class and an impact pass rusher who will help the Bruins right away
The full 247Sports Composite ranking of 2017 recruits is here, led by the country’s 33 consensus five-stars. A few of them will change the Playoff race this year.
